How Deep Do We Need To Drill?
To find water in Africa, we need to drill a borehole. The depth varies based on several factors:
- Water Level: We normally drill between 30 and 100 meters to reach the water level below the ground that is full of water. In some areas, the water level is close to the surface, while in others, it is much deeper.
- Soil and Rock: The soil and rock type affects drilling depth. Hard rock areas may require deeper drilling, while regions with softer soil might need shallower drilling to reach water.
- Climate: Regions with more rainfall often have a higher water level, meaning we do not need to drill as deep. The water level is normally lower in dry regions, needing deeper drilling.
- Seasons: The water level can change with the seasons. During the dry season, the water level may drop, requiring deeper drilling to reach water.
- Water Quality: Sometimes, shallow water sources may be dirty. Such cases require deep drilling to reach cleaner and safer water.
